E. B. Gallardo Ethnography:
Exploring the city one mercurial moment at a time
Hi! I am Elizabeth A. Burbach Gallardo. I am an urban ethnographer based in New York City.
I study city culture and cultures in the city. I listen to the people, places, things, and activities of the city and tell their stories. My specialty is the Street. I am fascinated by the dynamic relationship between and among human beings and the built environment. I document the processes and products of this relationship: the artful, ingenious, and often unpredictable ways we humans and the city interact, negotiate, make ourselves heard, create value, carve out a little space and comfort, and in so doing impact one another.
I call this ‘Aesthetics of the City.’ We take part in city aesthetics everyday, in ways large and small. Doing so, we produce culture. I ask, what is it we produce?
I aim to bring to light what we may overlook. To celebrate what we may take for granted. To remind us to take a good look around and to fully engage who and what we see and experience.
This website showcases some of my research.
