Dominican Clubs
Sport, culture, and recreation clubs in the Dominican Republic are locally based, autonomous institutions connected in aim and mission throughout the nation by a central organization, the Dominican Federation of Clubs, itself autonomous from the national government. Clubs are not federally subsidized.
Clubs have no relation to Dominican professional baseball team clubs or franchises, such as los Tigres de Licey (Licey Tigers) in Santo Domingo or las Águilas Cibaeñas (Cibao Eagles) in Santiago. Nor are they sporting clubs for the elite.
Dominican clubs are community centers used by the masses. In their current scope and mission they are much like the YMCA and akin to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In the implementation of baseball programming, they share much in common with the US Little Leagues.
Dominican clubs work socially, practically, and politically on behalf of their communities. They aim to better individuals and the nation.
